I am very tired, I am very low
Mind races back and forth, it will not slow
Phone rings suddenly, charge nurse on the line
Puts me in my place, for the umpteenth time
I ask three questions, I explain my view
Negative response. I think what to do.
I am very tired, I am very low
Mind races back and forth, tidal ebb and flow
I try to be calm, try to be polite,
Smiling as I talk, do I sound contrite?
Adjustments required, finally agreed,
Feel inadequate because of my need.
I am very tired, I am very low
Mind races back and forth, always on the go
I replay events, again and again
Where did I go wrong? Should I take the blame?
I will not be silenced or compliant
When rights matter, I remain defiant.
This poem is inspired by Recuerdo by Edna St. Vincent Millay. It was written following a difficult phone conversation. The matter was eventually addressed, but it did take a lot of determination.
September 2023 is Blood Cancer Awareness Month. It is also Child Cancer Awareness Month. Every day 10 children in the UK are diagnosed with cancer. Of those lucky enough to survive, many will have long-term side-effects that may significantly impact their lives forever.
I am posting one poem per day to recognise this and raise money for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. This charity provides sailing and other outdoor adventures for children and young people aged 8-24 who have been treated for cancer. But it’s more than that. There’s a package of support around this including siblings, return trips, volunteering opportunities and so on. The Trust also works hard to ensure their work is environmentally sustainable. You can make a donation HERE!
Stick to your guns Juliet! I’ve always admired your focus, determination and ability to work it out. I remember sitting in one of the wee music rooms at lunch and you telling me that you were leaving school in fifth year and your reasoning behind it.
