The strand lands on my pillow
A dark gesture of intent
More curls fall
Responding to the call
Chemotherapy unfurls
Clumps wash into the sink
Shampoo-laced sodden tresses
I fumble hastily
Gathering memories my hair possesses
Daily, my collection grows
Loss, change, adaptation
Re-growth re-builds my life
New liberation
There’s something poignant about losing one’s hair and regrowing it again. For me it’s always symbolised new life and continuity. I was pleased to grow curls, as prior to this my hair was straight. The hair loss can vary enormously from person to person. For example, I lost a little, but not all, of my eybrows and half of my eyelashes on one eye. I also lost all of my body hair which was a tad unexpected - this wasn’t mentioned in any information I read.
Flynne’s Barn is a place where young people living with cancer can come together and find connection in beautiful surroundings and provides a range of immersive outdoor and creative experiences. I am sharing one poem per day during September 2022 to raise money for this charity. To DONATE, visit my GO FUND ME page. Many thanks.
