Hat Pride
My hair is gone, my hats are back
Tbh they never went away
I love the warmth these hats give
A head cuddle everyday
Tara and Sarah each knitted me a hat
The colours and shapes make me smile
A teal tuque with a turquoise edge
A lilac bandana, pirate-style
Those hats, they make me joyful
Created with panache and love
I can wear them both together
Blue below, the purple above
The winter walks pass quickly by
I wear both hats with pride
The looks I get give me giggles
And my head’s toasty warm outside
Inspired by “The Orange” by Wendy Cope which is one of the happiest poems I’ve read. I’m grateful to Tara and Sarah for their wonderful knitted hats. Double hatting is essential in winter as one’s head is much colder without a covering of hair.
September 2023 is Blood Cancer Awareness Month. It is also Child Cancer Awareness Month. Every day 10 children in the UK are diagnosed with cancer. Of those lucky enough to survive, many will have long-term side-effects that may significantly impact their lives forever.
I am posting one poem per day to recognise this and raise money for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. This charity provides sailing and other outdoor adventures for children and young people aged 8-24 who have been treated for cancer. But it’s more than that. There’s a package of support around this including siblings, return trips, volunteering opportunities and so on. The Trust also works hard to ensure their work is environmentally sustainable.
