See me, now I’ve cancer
I’ve become really posh
I live in a penthouse suite on the 7th floor
And get to eat free nosh
I hobnob with the high and mighty
That’s the gulls and other birds
I’m a high-flier, don’t you know?
Even if it seems absurd
See me, now I’ve cancer
I’ve become a free spirit an’ all
I travel first class whenever I want to
I’ve a private plane at my beck and call
I go wherever I want to
At whatever time of day
My body may be trapped in a hospital room
But my mind is free, come what may
See me, now I’ve cancer
There’s nothing I can’t do
I just lie there and imagine
I’m making my dreams come true
I’ve not left this world
Yet I’ve got wings to fly
I’m on an amazing adventure
Floating high… high… high…
This poem is about the days when I was too ill to do anything but lie in my hospital bed. To keep me happy I would listen to calming music and dream of special places. This included re-visiting all the places I had lived in my childhood and my fantasy home on a Mediterranean beach. Everyone needs a fantasy second home somewhere. In the photo above, this is the “teenage” room in the Haematology ward that has a beautiful photo of Harris. It was my favourite room to be in. I wish all the rooms in hospitals had photos like this in them.
Flynne’s Barn is a place where young people living with cancer can come together and find connection in beautiful surroundings and provides a range of immersive outdoor and creative experiences. I am sharing one poem per day during September 2022 to raise money for this charity. To DONATE, visit my GO FUND ME page. Many thanks.
Anthony Nolan is a stem cell register that does a vital job encouraging young people aged 16-30 yr olds to sign up as potential stem cell donors. It’s a one-off process where donors would be matched with a patient in need of a lifesaving transplant. Each person has roughly a 1 in 800 chance of being a match. To sign up, you’d need to fill in a short online form that takes less than 10 minutes, then cheek swabs are sent to you in the post to complete and send back. Painless and potentially life-saving. Every young person who can, needs to join. PLEASE encourage everyone you know in this age group to sign up.
